Last Tuesday I did a ridiculously long hike into the Sleepy G with the hopes of making a loop up the Chimney then back down through the Top of the Giant trail. The Chimney trail has been closed for a few years and i've heard some rumblings that it might soon be impassable. I took me just over 2h to reach the talas slope that signals the start of the climb up through the crevasse that is leads to Giant’s ‘feet.’ This part of the trail is composed mostly of laminated (not stratified) shale and so the climbing was very difficult as every step broke the slick shale into even smaller pieces. Maintaining purchase with the slope was quite difficult but once up through into the Chimney proper the shale gave way to diabase boulders which are much more solid made the climbing a little easier, however not much further up I reached the diabase capping rock that makes the Giant what it is. This part has weathered to the point where the slope is near vertical and I felt it wasn’t safe to climb any higher without having someone with me to evacuate my sorry ass in the case I had a tumble. Made a 180 there and hauled it back to the parking lot just as the sun was setting.
So that was last Tuesday’s adventure, this Tuesday was an adventure of a different sort. Since I’ll be starting structured training again next week i made the best of my last opportunity enjoy Tankard Tuesday in it's fullest before resuming my post as the DD for the lucky basterds that don’t have to race Svein Tuft next June. The specifics of the night are pretty blurry, I do remember my ride getting kicked out for some reason, and I also recall the cabbie giving me short change, so that calculus course must be paying off if I can do basic math in a highly inebriated state. Had a great time but I know it will be a long while before I can to do another anaerobic effort like that, maybe March 6 2011 is good date.
And because it was Country Night:
